Uninstalling Ziff

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

Over on my day job blog, I’ve detailed the reasons why Ziff will soon be bailing off of CommunityServer 1.1 blogs in favor of Moveable Type Enterprise. Or, at least some of them. And I’ve also announced that I will no longer be posting there.

I am two weeks away from my 5-year anniversary at Ziff Davis Media, and as of Friday I won’t be getting any closer to that anniversary. I am leaving the hard-knock life of being, as a certain colleague put it at our corporate Christmas party, the “IT bitch” for Ziff Enterprise. Starting next week, I will be editorial director of TechTarget’s new Channel Media Group.

Which, ironically, means I’ll have more time and a larger supply of brain cells to work on further coding for my personal projects. It’s amazing how actually having to do IT every day for someone else (under adverse working conditions) can sap you of the energy that you put into the rest of your life.

Being a “Director of IT Strategy” without any staff, any budget, and getting paid well below market rate compensation consumed a lot of my psychic energy. I didn’t get to do much in the way of strategy, really.

But getting the chance to create something new was what brought me to Ziff inthe first place, and that opportunity has now risen again elsewhere.
